Wrigley Field, Soldier Field, and some great jazz music

Wow, what a day it was today. After lunch Ivan and I headed out on our bikes in downtown Chicago traffic heading toward the bike path near the lake. I was in the high 80's and just beautiful. We were able to go by Wrigley Field and then Soldiers Field as well. All total we rode 32 miles in a little over 2 hours - not bad consider we were riding in traffic a lot. Then it was off to Giordano's for a great Chicago deep dish pizza and man was it excellent. We stopped by Hershey's Chocolate store and took a peek inside the American Girl Doll store. You'll see an assortment of pics from all the places mentioned above, plus the Weber Grill Restaurant, Mike Ditkas, and Harry Caray's restaurant.

We capped this evening off with a trip to Andy's Jazz Club for some great jazz music. The atmosphere wasn't the greatest, but the music was hot!

Tomorrow is a full day of conferences and then we head back to Yorkville Thursday night late. I'll stay with Ivan and his family Thursday night and head on back to CR Friday morning. I am really missing my family and I can't wait to get home to see them. Tye out.

Moody Pastor's Conference - Wednesday

Here we are already in the third day of the pastor's conference and time is flying! The speakers have been good and I have enjoyed time with my friend Ivan and also time to spend in the word and meditation. We walked to the 1450 foot tall Sears Tower yesterday afternoon and visited Millennium Park. Of course there was stop in Starbucks (they are everywhere!) for a Caramel Frappuccino. This afternoon is free time (I need it!!!) so Ivan and I are going bike riding in Chicago. There is a trail on the lakeside so we are going to hit that. After working up an appetite we are going to eat at Giordano's for some stuff crust, Chicago style pizza.
This morning I sat in on a 4 panel Q&A that included Knute Larsen, Michael Easley, Randy Pope, and George Waddles. Their topic was leadership so I was interested to see what they had to say. Greg Wheatley (moderator and voice of Moody Broadcasting) asked them how they keep a healthy balance in their lives and not letting the ministry overwhelm their lives (like I did for ten years at my first church). Randy Pope offered three points:
1. Pastor's need to be wholehearted worshippers. You can become so busy with the business of the ministry that you forget that you are worshipper first, then a pastor second.
2. Pastor's need to be pursuing disciple-making. We have to be hanging out and mixing it up with unbelievers because this is the only way we will reach them.

3. Pastor's need to be involved in effective disciple-training. We must be developing people and pouring into their lives.
Those are good words. I am so thrilled that I have been doing these three things for the past few years and it has completely changed my life and ministry.
I am so thankful that I am such an excellent church like New Covenant Bible Church. They believe in leadership developement and put their money where their mouth is so to speak. That's it for now. Tye out.

Greetings from Chicago!!!

I am in downtown Chicago at Moody Bible Institute for their annual Pastor's conference. I am attending with a friend from college days Ivan Truman.

First, I LOVE CHICAGO!!! Wow, it's fast, there are tons of restaurants, and lots and lots of people. Ivan gave me a walking tour yesterday and we saw the Hancock Building, Hershey's, Portillo's (we ate there!), Hard Rock Cafe, and of course, Giordano's Pizza.

The conference is going well. The worship band, well, let's just say that it's not one of our bands at NCBC or even Emergency Landing. Nuf said.

The speakers have been good. Michael Easley, the new president of Moody spoke last night and his talk was really good. He seems like a servant leader and was just real with the pastors last night. Here is the outline from his talk last night:

Nine Indicators of a Godly Leader
From the life of Nehemiah

1. They identify with the problem. (Nehemiah 1:3-6)
2. They are servants (1:8-11)
3. They know their time (2:8) In other words, they have a sense of God's calling and presence in their lives.
4. They have opposition (2:10) "Not everyone will like you, but conduct yourself in a manner so that most will respect you."
5. They clarify the task (2:11-18)
6. They cast vision (2:17-18) "Let us rebuild."
7. They enlist the right workers (3:1-32)
8. They pray (1:4-11; 2:4-5; 4:4, 9-10)

Judy's first blog post

My lovely wife Judy is not much for blogs, even mine. But today something happened that SHE deemed blog worthy. You see, today was "change the brakes on the van and volvo day" after a full day at Panera. While I was rushing around getting the jacks out and all the tools, she was out in the garage trying to talk to me and she was kind of getting in the way. So in an effort to solve a problem (and be funny) I took some chalk and drew a circle where she could stand and be safe. : ) (please click on the pic for a brief slideshow)

Now explain something to me. Why is it when a woman is in the garage a man draws a circle for her to stand in and when a man is in the kitchen, he is all over the place? I was a little curious about this phenomenon. If I were cooking a large dinner a man would be in the center of the kitchen picking at the food that is being prepared before it is ready to be served and eating over the dish. Why I just walk into the garage to encourage my man that he is doing a great job of changing the brakes and offer him a drink, he puts me in a circle. Only to ask me later to come out of my circle to turn the wheel left (and I turned it right) and then pump the air out of the brake line. I just do not understand. Just wait next time when he is in the kitchen POW! Right in the kisser.

American Idol Update

Elliot still can't sing. They should haveinvited Carrie Underwood - Academy of Country Music's female vocalist of the year - to sing.

Looks like Melinda is the judge's fave and mine too.

Time spent together

Judy and I spent yesterday and today up in historic Galena, Illinois. We stayed at a beautiful bed and breakfast Farmer's Guest House. The owners Jess and Kathy were just wonderful. In fact, Jess is a drummer and he loves jazz music. Formerly he lived in New York City and was a frequent visitor to the world famous Birdland. His college roommate (name escapes me) played percussion for many famous acts and was teaching the late, great, tenor saxist Michael Brecker how to play percussion.

We headed out yesterday around 10:30 AM and went straight to Galena where we walked the street and did some window shopping winding up at Vinny Venucci's for a wonderful authentic Italian lunch. Then we checked into the B&B and enjoyed some relaxing down time in our room - Camelot.

Although it rained yesterday, it was warm. This morning we awakened to beautiful blue skies and the smell of breakfast. We met a couples from Peoria, Milwaukee, and somewhere in Illinois.

It was a wonderful time with my beautiful wife of 21 years and I thank God for her and our marriage everyday. I love you sweetie!!!

I'm proud to be an American!

I met with a man this morning who is being deployed to Afghanistan and he was telling me about the mission he served in Iraq back in 2005. He was sharing about how inaccurate the media reporting is regarding what is happening in Iraq because the mainstream media (as we well know) picks and chooses what it wants to report. Now that that is off my chest...

I am so proud of our men and women serving our country! They and their families are sacrificing greatly to ensure that we will never again have to face a 911 tragedy. All this talk got me thinking this morning, so here are some of my thoughts.

Why is our country so great? Check out this sentence in the Bible:

Righteousness exalts a nation,
but sin is a disgrace to any people. Proverbs 14:34 NET Bible

When any country acts righteously they are typically exalted. They gain the favor of our Creator God and often are recipients of his blessing. Our country was founded on principles found in the Bible.

Sin is a disgrace.... Question: what is sin? This is where things get a little complicated.

Here's the rub - when the Bible is no longer the rule and authority "sin" becomes fuzzy. Who says homosexuality is wrong? Fundamentalists right-wingers? NO! The Bible says that homosexuality is wrong, not the people who read it and attempt to obey. (sorry to pick on homosexuality - stealing is sin too)

The Bible is my standard for what is right. It is like a level that you use to keep a wall flat and straight. It is like a plumb line that tells me what is straight up and down. It is an objective standard by which we measure everything.

I have a question for you: what is your standard of truth? Mine is the Bible. And after reading it through many, many times I find it to be absolutely accurate it make so much sense.

Our Prom Queen

Yesterday I became the "father of the prom queen." Well, Allyson wasn't actually voted the prom queen, but I think she was!!! You can click on the pic for a slide show courtesy of Kim Pagel.

Allyson was escorted by her friend Josh Pagel. They went with a group of six people to Biaggi's Ristorante Italiano right here in CR. It is an upscale restaurant that has really fine Italian food.

Next came group pictures at the Galle's and then we headed on over to the High School for the Grand March. Now I have to confess that I had no idea what this was all about until this year. At the Grand March the students are all presented on the stage which you will see in the slide show. It was so wonderful to see all the beautiful gowns and tuxes. The young people looked so nice, especially Allyson and Josh!

Allyson, we are so proud of you and thrilled to see all that God is doing in your life. Dad out.

As followers of Jesus Christ we have to be proactive at dispelling the "bad rap" Christianity has taken because of the past. And how do we do that?

Genuine love. We have to stop judging the world and start loving it. The people that I interact with don't need someone preaching to them. They need someone to love them.

It's Monday morning!

I typically look forward to Monday mornings. Not today. I'm just plain ole wore out from speaking four times yesterday. I left early this morning for Iowa City to visit a good friend in the hospital which was a good thing. We had a nice visit.

However, on a typical Monday morning I am at my remote office (Panera) by around 8:30 AM spending time in the word, praying, interacting with folks and checking email. I enjoy reading Monday Morning Insight and will often leave a comment or two on the blog. I will also post a blog entry on something that interests me and hopefully you too.

I also enjoy some time with my accountability partner and friend too. I always enjoy connecting with him and especially today because I was able to get some feedback on my message. This morning he had some very encouraging things to say.

Today is a little different though. I'm still trying to get traction. No worries though. This will be a day to recharge the batteries and get ready for the rest of the week. Tye out.

Emergency Landing led worship today!

WOW! Our worship band today was our very own Emergency Landing. Matt Thede and Mike Davis shared worship leading duties. Matt and Mike both play guitar as well. Angie Wacker sings and plays keyboard and her husband Jared plays the bass. This great team is rounded out with Brett Calcera. They did an awesome job.

I'm not sure which tune I enjoyed most, but I'll say that "The Heart of Worship" and "Jesus Paid it All" was right up there at the top. They did "Jesus Paid it All" to this contemporay groove that was awesome with an electric guitar background.

Emergency Landing is heading to Kyrgyzstan this summer on a missions trip. You guys are going to do great and I pray you have an awesome impact for the kingdom of God. Tye out.

Sunday's talk is going well!

I am back in my office between the 2nd and 3rd services having a snack and chillin' before I speak next around 11:30. The first service went well, but I have to confess I was pretty nervous. I don't give the talk that often in "big" church and it is a daunting task!
The second service went better - I had to cut some of my intro material out to save time. I enjoyed the audience interaction as well - there was a lot of synergy there. People are not used to a speaker who when he asks a question expects an outloud response! That's just me.

I did decide against using the "man who had lost his job and became a recluse" story on the advice of a blog reader's feedback. In hindsight I realize that things can lose their meaning in print. It truly is a hilarious story when you tell it out loud, but in print it looks horrible. Better safe than sorry!

Building a Sunday talk for church

Welp, I almost done with my talk for tomorrow. I've been up here at Panera working away at the finishing touches on my message for tomorrow all the while enjoy the community experience.

Sharing a talk at church is similar to building a house. You select a location and in my case that is sharing the need for the small group, kitchen table, environment. Then, you need to select a floorplan that will serve you and your family. I have decided on a 3-story building, or three points: The biblical basis for community, the benefits of community, and the ways to get involved in a kitchen table environment.
I am planning to open with a humorous illustration of a man who had become a recluse because he lost his job and was unemployed with his health going downhill every day. When he refused to get help his wife went to see a counselor and he gave her the remedy! She would wait on him hand and foot from morning, noon, to night, preparing his fave food, and even a special little treat after the kids had gone to bed that involved sexy lingerie.

Well, the story goes that she went home and when her husband asked her what the counselor had said, she said, "YOU AIN'T GONNA MAKE IT!!!" (I love that one!)

Have you heard of any these people who at one point or another in their lives had become recluses: Marlon Brando, Bob Dylan, Syd Barret (Pink Floyd guitarist), George Harrison, Bobby Fischer (former world chess champion), Emily Dickinson, Theodore Kaczynski, Charles Ogden (children’s book author), Greta Garbo, and Bill Watterson (Calvin and Hobbes creator).

Marlon Brando's son murdered his sister's boyfriend, and then she killed herself five years later. And what about Howard Hughes? Raised by an overbearing mother who attempted to shield young Howard from anything unhealthy. Hughes died a miserable recluse with billions of dollars in assests, and trying everything in his power to avoid paying taxes to the point that he moved every 180 days (or less actuallYy) so he would never have residence in any one city.

Bottom line? We ALL need community. It really does take a village to raise a child. It also requires healthy community for a person to flourish and grow. BTW, my small group meets tonight and I can't wait!

The Day of Reason Observance ~ tolerance







Until yesterday, I never knew about this "counter observance" known as The Day of Reason. After checking out their website I think the main rub is the fact that the government has declared this to be a special day of prayer and this is seen as a violation of the constitution.

Before I start into this subject I want to say that I am for tolerance. While I do not agree with the views of those who embrace The Day of Reason, I am glad they are protected by free speech. And, I am not offended by their Day of Reason observance.

Is the National Day of Prayer a violation of the consitution? You be the judge:

First Amendment: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;

I'm not exactly sure how a National Day of Prayer violates this amendment. Congress is not establishing a national religion by declaring a day of prayer.

Don't forget that when our nation was attacked by terrorists on 9/11 and thousands of innocent lives were taken, our congressman stood on the steps of the capitol building (or whatever building it was) and sang "God Bless America." Maybe there really aren't any "aethist in foxholes."

I love this country. I love the freedoms we enjoy. I'm glad that those who celebrated the National Day of Reason had the right to do so. I'm glad the National Day of Prayer enjoyed the same freedom. Tye out.

National Day of Prayer ~ Cedar Rapids

Today was the National Day of Prayer. The Executive Board of the Linn County Associations of Evangelicals sponsors the event and they needed someone to play the Star Spangled Banner so I volunteered to play it on my sax. Click here for a pic of yours truly tooting his own horn. : )

It was a chilly day due to the windy conditions down by the river.

The event started at noon and finished at 1 PM. There were prayers offered for the businesses of Cedar Rapids and the economy, our churches, para church organizations such as FCA and Youth for Christ, our national, state, and local leaders, schools, and the media. I think the most moving prayer was for our men and women serving our country in the fight against terror. James Leatherman led that prayer and halfway through he was overcome by emotion. Thank you to everyone who is serving our country!

I would say there was around 200-250 people in attendance. In spite of the chilly conditions, it was a good day and it is good to be reminded that our country was founded on the premise that all men are created equal and are endowed by their Creator... Here is the first few lines of the Declaration of Independence.

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,
When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable
Rights....

This nation was founded on principles that are based in the Holy Scriptures and I for one am glad. I am thankful for this. Our country has been one of the most prosperous nation on the planet for many reasons: free enterprise, democratic government, and freedom to worship God without fear.

You might be saying to yourself, wow, what a narrow-minded bigot. hmmm. I will never be for cramming my beliefs down your throat. You are certainly free to choose how you worship or don't. But you have to admit that a society that follows the basic teaching of the Bible is going to better off for it, no matter what you believe about God.

(oh boy - I'm heading for the soapbox) It wasn't the evangelical Christian community that drove planes into the World Trade Center. And who showed up first in Louisiana after hurricane Katrina and what country sent aid to the Tsunami victims? Barring religious wackos, when did you hear of people in this great nation we live in using car bombs to retaliate against innocent people (please don't tell me about Waco, Oklahoma City, and the Jim Jones thing)?

I'm thankful to be an American. I love this country with all its faults and failures. And today was my opportunity to spend time praying for it.

BTW - I'll never believe that we can change this country through legislation. Revival will NOT start with the White House, it's going to start in your house! Tye out.

Jesus knew that the masses had deep needs. Yet, he spent most of his public ministry sharing life and ministry together with his small group of 12 disciples.

2. We benefit greatly by sharing life around the Kitchen Table

The Kitchen Table Environment ~ Small Groups

Here is my talk for this Sunday as it stands right now. I've been working on it off and on all day due to numerous meetings. I am feeling pretty positive about the direction and outline that I currently have thanks to the help of our Small Group Leadership Team and Bob Westfall, our senior/teaching pastor.

American Idol - May 2, 2007

I was able to get the grass cut tonight in time to get cleaned up and get situated on the couch for tonight's American Idol. Last night I thought everyone did as best they could with Bon Jovi rock but I have to say that Melinda Doolittle knocked it completely out of the ballpark. This gal was able to own the song and sing it as if she was the one who wrote it.

Tonight two people will get voted off. I hope it is Lakisha and the boyband singer guy ~ Chris. (but, if boyband lovers are voting, then he probably has a chance.) Blake is very ok. Jordin is ok too, she has had her moments. Phil is a really good singer, really good.

An American Idol ought to take your breath away. That's why I couldn't vote for Taylor or Fantasia (btw, where are they now?) (Rett, are you reading this : )

Melinda Doolittle takes my breath away. Carrie Underwood too. Ruben Studdard - not my style, but an awesome singer/performer. Katharine McPhee - breath-taking. Kelly Clarkson - total breath-taking. She knocked it out of the park last week on Idol Gives Back.

(Personal note: I've noticed that my fave performers have been women. Now don't get me wrong, but I have some fave male vocalists: Ray Charles, Tim McGraw, Johnny Cash, & Jo Don of Rascal Flatts, Lone Star, & Jason Aldean) Bon Jovi is performing, but I'm not much of a rocker fan. However, the dude can sing and perform.

So, here are my realtime comments:

Robin Thicke - A man who sings like a woman. Kind of reminiscent of Prince. (sorry Eric Bramlett - I don't do Prince) What was the point of this performance? He's not even a contestant.

LaKisha - stays? crazy.

Phil Stacy leaves - hmmm. what is America thinking?

Phil's final song: man, this guy can sing. gosh! I guess someone has to lose so someone else can win.

Bon Jovi - Nice hair dude. Classic rocker. Very appropriate song for the occasion. Real nice vocals. The harmonizing on the vocals was tight. I really dig the light show - did you notice?

Chris leaves. I guess boyband singers are not liked by America.

Chris's final song - another ok performance. This guy was not idol material.

I'm sermonating this week

I wanted to get a quick post up here to let all my regular readers know that I am spending a lot of time working on my talk for church Sunday. I am speaking on the Kitchen Table environment ~ Small Groups. At NCBC we celebrate three spaces where people connect: Front Porch (worship service), Living Room (ABF), and the Kitchen Table (small group).

I am planning to show the need for people to feel connection and a sense of belonging in all three spaces one way or another. This will be easy for me because I have personally benefited greatly from all three environments.
