CR Jazz Hosts Fareed Haque in concert November 22

CR Jazz is hosting Fareed Haque Saturday night, November 22, at 7:30 PM in Ballentyne Auditorium on the Kirkwood College campus. We rehearsed with Fareed tonight and he is an incredible guitarist who is also a really nice guy. I took a few shots of the rehearsal as well as some video. Click on the pic for some pics of CR Jazz rehearsing.

It should be a good concert. I hope. Tye out.

David Sanborn in concert

Sanborn on stage - pic taken with my phone

I had the opportunity to hear saxophonist David Sanborn on Wednesday night in Des Moines (that's in Iowa for those of you in Ohio) thanks to my good friend Dave Kvindlog. And it was an incredible concert. The amazing thing to me was the fact that Sanborn is still playing almost exactly the way he played 30 years ago and even played a lot of the same songs. But it was still incredible.

Back in the early eighties I purchased a Dukoff mouthpiece made popular by Sandborn and pursued a sound similar to his. At one time I could play his style with some success and even today there are times when I am improvising that you might be able to hear his influence in my playing.

The other story here is the band. wow. And that mighty Hammond B-3 organ. If you know me, you know that I love that instrument. It was incredible. Awesome night of jazz. Thanks Dave, both of you. Tye out.

Christmas presents

Once again we have experienced a wonderful Christmas! I received a new Cuisinart coffee grinder (pictured at left), Starbucks coffee, some bucks for iTunes (I am listening to Count Basie right now!), some cash, and a new denim shirt. The kids got some cool things as well.

I just downloaded some iTunes with my gift card from Allyson: Gerald Albright/Georgia on my Mind, Count Basie/Basie is Back Album, Joey DeFrancesco/Organic Vibes album, Diane Schuur/two selections from Blues for Schuur.

After all, I don't call it Tye's Jazz for anything. Tye out.

Another jazz great dies

I'm a little sad today because another jazz great has died and I did not have the privilege of seeing him perform. He was an amazing pianists that had a style that was unmistakable when you heard it. Rest in peace.

Here's the report from the Canadian Press:

Oscar Peterson, who once said playing piano gave him 'extreme joy,' dead at 82

TORONTO - Jazz pianist Oscar Peterson, whose flying fingers mesmerized audiences around the world - from dance halls in 1940s Montreal to the lights of Carnegie Hall and beyond - has died at age 82.

He played alongside the giants of jazz: Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Charlie Parker, Roy Eldridge, Nat King Cole, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington, who once called Peterson the "Maharajah of the keyboard."

"Until the end, Oscar Peterson could tour the world and fill concert halls everywhere," said Andre Menard, artistic director and co-founder of the Montreal International Jazz Festival.

"This is something that never diminished. His drawing power, his mystique as a musician, was so big that he remained at the top of his game until the end ... Oscar Peterson has been the musician every musician in the world can look up to and aspire to."

Word of Peterson's death at his home in Mississauga, Ont., set off a torrent of international tributes, including a statement from French president Nicolas Sarkozy, who said "one of the bright lights of jazz has gone out."

"He was a regular on the French stage, where the public adored his luminous style," Sarkozy added. "It is a great loss for us."

Let everything that has breath (even jazz musicians) praise the Lord!

Yesterday was an awesome day at New Covenant Bible Church as the big band performed in all four services. We did three numbers and there was one solo opportunity on It Came Upon a Midnight Clear. You can click here to listen. The recording does not do justice to the band, but will give you an idea of what it sounded like.

BTW, the choir number was really hot!!! It is the third selection in the recording!

The best part for me is the fact that I can use my talent to bring honor and glory to God through a medium that just a few years ago was considered "ungodly."

A special thanks to Gary and Angie for their passion for spiritual worship expressed through many forms, including the Christian big band! Tye out.

Praise the Lord!
Praise God in his sanctuary!
Praise him in the sky, which testifies to his strength!
Praise him for his mighty acts!
Praise him for his surpassing greatness!
Praise him with the blast of the horn!
Praise him with the lyre and the harp!
Praise him with the tambourine and with dancing!
Praise him with stringed instruments and the flute!
Praise him with loud cymbals!
Praise him with clanging cymbals!
Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord! Psalm 150 NET Bible

Post Sonny Fortune concert notes

The concert last night went very well! Sonny is a master saxist and was phenomenal last night. His combo tunes were the best part of the concert.

After the concert, some of us went to the Irish Democrat and I had a reuben sandwich with a side of heart burn!!! I've heard about the food there and now I can wholeheartedly concur that it was incredible.

Why the sleepy baby pic? I volunteered to transport Sonny Fortune to the airport so I had to pick him up at 5:20 AM and head to the airport. I was back in bed for an hour snooze before heading out to the church. This morning I was filling in for our worship arts pastor Gary Hoobler helping serve communion.

After the service I picked up the fam and we headed to Culver's for lunch. Then a two hour nap for yours truly. In a few minutes I am heading back for the evening services. Tye out.

Sonny Fortune Master Class

Even though I have had a maxed out schedule this week, I carved out a couple hours to attend a free master class with jazz saxist Sonny Fortune. He was friends with John Coltrane and talked about his influence on his life, both personally and musically. Sonny described him as a quiet guy who was very different on the stage. He said that he was "fiery" on stage as he played.

I had the privilege of transporting Sonny to the hotel last night and enjoyed his company. He is a humble man who loves jazz music a great deal. I'm looking forward to performing with him tonight. Tye out.

CR Jazz Big Band to perform November 10th with Sonny Fortune

CR Jazz Big Band will be performing along with the Kirkwood Student Jazz Band at Kirkwood College in Ballantyne Auditorium November 10th at 7:30 PM. It should be a good concert.

Both bands will be performing tunes with Sonny Fortune, saxist. I am really looking forward to meeting Sonny - I actually get to transport him tonight and tomorrow.

There are several people from New Covenant Bible Church participating as well: Joel Tee, Robert Dunham, Jason Grimm, and Steve Graham. Come on out and enjoy some big band jazz! Tye out.

Denver and the Mile High Orchestra

It's Saturday night and I'm feeling the effects of a recently acquired cold - I don't feel so hot. So, I'm sitting here on the couch watching an incredible football game: Ohio State and Penn State.

But you all know that I REALLY would prefer to be blowing some great jazz music, and as luck would have it I found this clip of Denver and the Mile High Orchestra and thought I would share it with you. The tenor sax solo is incredible and I love that vintage Mark VI. I had one once upon a time and got rid of it because I didn't think it could be used to glorify God. Too bad. So, I'm praying that the Lord will give it back to me. Maybe some day. Enjoy the vid. Jammin' Tye out.

NCBC big band performs

Sunday was an awesome day as the NCBC Big Band performed in all four services. We played a real kicking version of Blessed Assurance arranged for Denver and Mile High Orchestra. Then we played a saucy version of a hymn that has escaped my mind right now - it's late. Listen here.

I never dreamed there would be a day when I would be playing my fave kind of music in church. Thanks to Gary and Angie who work so hard so that we can use our gifts and talents for the Lord.

Jazz at Konstantino's

Last night I had the privilege once again of playing in the Iowa Vanguard Jazz Collective in downtown Cedar Rapids at Konstantino's. It was a good night. We did several rock numbers and also latin tunes. I prefer the straight ahead bepop and hard-swinging, Basie style tunes, but it was still fun to play with such a talented group of musicians.

Thanks to Dave, MaryAnn, and Karen who stopped in to listen. It was cool seeing familiar faces. Dave asked me why I play and I simply told him "pure joy." It is absolutely pure joy to play with a big band.

What do you do for the pure joy of it? I can tell you that I sense God's pleasure when I play music. Tye out.

Ecclesiastes 2:24
-26 There is nothing better for people than to eat and drink, and to find enjoyment in their work. I also perceived that this ability to find enjoyment comes from God. 25 For no one can eat and drink or experience joy apart from him. 26 For to the one who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy but to the sinner, he gives the task of amassing wealth - only to give it to the one who pleases God. This task of the wicked is futile – like chasing the wind! NET Bible

Jazz @ Konstantinos

Tonight I had the privilege of playing with the Iowa Vanguard Jazz Collective at Konstantinos in Cedar Rapids. It was an awesome night and the band never sounded better. It was a great setting and there were a handful of people there enjoying the music.

We are hoping that this will turn into a regular gig. Stay tuned for details. Tye out.

A little out of sync this morning

This morning I helped get Judy and MacKenzie off to Cleveland to visit friends and pick up Morgan who has been there since June 9, so I am a little out of my routine this morning - maybe a good thing.

I wound up at my office at 8 AM (that NEVER happens) and instead of getting into the word, I wound up answering emails and then checking out some tunes on http://www.jazzimprov.tv/. Don't ask me how, but I wound up watching STan Getz on YouTube perform "Lush Life."

I never was much of a Stan Getz person. I prefered the tenor sound of Trane and Stitt. (if you have to ask....) That said, I loved this clip and thought you would too. Enjoy!

Wrigley Field, Soldier Field, and some great jazz music

Wow, what a day it was today. After lunch Ivan and I headed out on our bikes in downtown Chicago traffic heading toward the bike path near the lake. I was in the high 80's and just beautiful. We were able to go by Wrigley Field and then Soldiers Field as well. All total we rode 32 miles in a little over 2 hours - not bad consider we were riding in traffic a lot. Click on the pic for a slideshow.

Then it was off to Giordano's for a great Chicago deep dish pizza and man was it excellent. We stopped by Hershey's Chocolate store and took a peek inside the American Girl Doll store. You'll see an assortment of pics from all the places mentioned above, plus the Weber Grill Restaurant, Mike Ditkas, and Harry Caray's restaurant.

We capped this evening off with a trip to Andy's Jazz Club for some great jazz music. The atmosphere wasn't the greatest, but the music was hot!

Tomorrow is a full day of conferences and then we head back to Yorkville Thursday night late. I'll stay with Ivan and his family Thursday night and head on back to CR Friday morning. I am really missing my family and I can't wait to get home to see them. Tye out.

Time spent together

Judy and I spent yesterday and today up in historic Galena, Illinois. We stayed at a beautiful bed and breakfast Farmer's Guest House. The owners Jess and Kathy were just wonderful. In fact, Jess is a drummer and he loves jazz music. Formerly he lived in New York City and was a frequent visitor to the world famous Birdland. His college roommate (name escapes me) played percussion for many famous acts and was teaching the late, great, tenor saxist Michael Brecker how to play percussion.

As always, you can click on the pic for a slideshow.

We headed out yesterday around 10:30 AM and went straight to Galena where we walked the street and did some window shopping winding up at Vinny Venucci's for a wonderful authentic Italian lunch. Then we checked into the B&B and enjoyed some relaxing down time in our room - Camelot.

Although it rained yesterday, it was warm. This morning we awakened to beautiful blue skies and the smell of breakfast. We met a couples from Peoria, Milwaukee, and somewhere in Illinois.

It was a wonderful time with my beautiful wife of 21 years and I thank God for her and our marriage everyday. I love you sweetie!!!

Recording with the Kirkwood Student Jazz Band

I got a call two Friday's ago after I got off at Panera from Tim Feldkamp out at Kirkwood College. The lead alto sax player was out of town and the band was scheduled to have a recording session on Monday and he wanted me to play for the band in the session.

So, I headed out to pick up the music and begin practicing because Tim said that it was going to quite challenging. It was.

I worked on difficult sections Saturday, and then on Sunday I worked on the parts between playing in brassline at all four services. I even stayed after the "welcome lunch" and practiced part of the afternoon.

Monday at 3 o'clock I sat down in the lead alto chair for the first time since leaving CCM back in 1981. And I have to say it felt good! Well, until I screwed up the next to last measure of the first tune not once, but twice! How humbling.

All in all the session went well. I had several solos and enjoyed working with the young people. I was invited back on Wednesday to cover again! It was a lot of fun! Thanks to Dr. Tim Feldkamp for having confidence in me to pull off the book! Tye out!

Christian McBride - your humility is cool man!

Christian McBride performs with the CR Jazz Band

Our big band (CR Jazz) had the awesome privilege of playing with bassist Christian McBride. He was fun to hang out with and talk jazz with. He was fun to be around and exuded humility. And you all know that I love to talk about humble, servant leaders. Check out this cut and paste from Christian's blog My Thang as he defers the credit for an upcoming album release to the other guys in the quartet:

New York Time Posted on 4/17/2007at 4:57 AM
Last September, a CD featuring myself, Javon Jackson, Cedar Walton, and Jimmy Cobb entitled "New York Time" was released on Chesky Records. I've gotten a number of e-mails congratulating me on "my latest CD". "I" even got a five-star review in BBC music magazine with a big half-size photo and everything. But I must tell you, this in no way, shape, or form is my CD. It was my understanding that this was to be a co-op CD that was centered around Mr. Jimmy Cobb, as there was another CD recorded the day before "New York Time" with Mr. Cobb, myself, and Hank Jones entitled "West of 5th." As you can see, my name is listed first on the CD jacket insinuating that it just might very well be my CD. I wish I could take credit for putting together a band like this, but I can't. So, the next time you see Jimmy Cobb, give him some extra dap! HE'S the man on this CD! (written by Christian McBride on his blog)

It is so refreshing to meet people who are humble, yet great. Thanks Christian for blessing us with your musical talent, and your humble ways! Tye out.

Jammin' with the CR Jazz Band

Last night I had the awesome privilege of playing with the CR Jazz Band at Kirkwood College with guest artist Christian McBride. I was so pleased to see several of my friends, a co-worker and some fellow musicians from New Covenant Bible Church come out for an evening of big band jazz. You can click on the pic for a slideshow courtesy of John Maurice.

The concert went great and Christian McBride was absolutely phenomenal! He did things with an upright bass that I had never heard before. It was so awesome getting to jam with such a monster player like Christian. And he was a cool guy too! He played with the student band during the first half of the concert and afterwards he was debriefing with the rhythm section on how they did - an educator to boot!

I really enjoyed getting to take some solos (improv) on three of the tunes. I felt like a fish in water. We did this cool thing on Tunisia where I traded fours with Rene Ybarra on trumpet. I kinda screwed up the timing on the solo break, but it all came out ok. Broadbottom was a cool kinda ii-V7 chord structure that was a lot of fun to solo over. I wound up playing some real bluesy licks on that one. Finally, I played an alto solo on Sister Sadie an that one almost got away from me! I got so wound up I almost overplayed it. (Click here to see a clip of the GRP All Star big band performing this one. The alto player is a monster!)

Thanks to Todd & Amy, Scott & Andi, Joe & Delene, Tom & Gina, and Dave & Beth for coming out to hear the band. Special thanks to John Maurice for taking pictures! It was great to look out into the crowd and see some familiar faces! Thank you so much!!!
